Preserving and stewarding the eight cultures of Earth

Octa Cultures in brief

Octa Cultures works to preserve and steward the eight cultures of Earth: Human, Animal, Plant, Insect, Aquatic, Algae, Fungi and Bacteria. Our work is organised across Earth’s 846 ecoregions, and we’re cultivating a worldwide network of people who share knowledge, wisdom and resources to care for them.

846ecoregions
A map of the world in hundreds of colours, one for each of Earth’s 846 land ecoregions: violets across the far north, aqua along the Arctic coasts, deep greens in the Amazon, the Congo and Southeast Asia, browns, ochres and sands across the Sahara, Arabia and Australia, reds around the Mediterranean, and light grey ice on Greenland and Antarctica.

Ecoregions: RESOLVE Ecoregions 2017 (Dinerstein et al., BioScience, 2017), CC BY 4.0, each in its own colour; realms: One Earth Bioregions 2023; marine zones: 200 nm exclusive economic zones (Marine Regions lineage), clipped to Natural Earth. One planet, 846 different homes for life.

Each colour on this map is one ecoregion: a large area of land with its own climate, landforms and community of species. Ecoregions of the same kind, or biome, share a family of colours. Violets are the boreal forests of the far north, aqua and blue the tundra, deep greens the tropical rainforests. Browns, ochres and sands are the deserts, reds the Mediterranean woodlands, and magenta the mangroves. Light grey is rock and ice.

No two are alike. Earth holds rainforests where it rains on most days of the year, and deserts where years can pass without rain. It holds grasslands that burn and grow back, tundra that stays frozen for most of the year, and coasts where forests grow in salt water. Climb a mountain and the climate changes every few hundred metres. And inside every ecoregion lie countless smaller climates: the shaded side of a valley, the floor of a forest, the edge of a spring, a single field. Life has adapted to each of them.

Why our work is hard

There is no single answer for 846 different homes.

What protects one ecoregion can harm another: the fire a savanna needs would destroy a rainforest. Each place needs its own knowledge, its own people and its own patience. So we do not look for one solution to copy across the planet. We study each ecoregion through all eight aspects, and we work with the people who live there. Our atlas already holds a profile for every one of the 846, and most are still first drafts, waiting for their full story. We know this is the work of generations, and we take it seriously.

Mission

Life is sustained through relationships.

Within humanity, and among all of Earth’s living cultures. Since the mid-20th century, human activity has increasingly strained those relationships, to the point of destabilising the Earth system itself. Octa Cultures exists to study, preserve, heal and restore them, and to lay the foundations for a future in which all life can flourish.

Methodology

One framework for the whole of life.

The Octa Methodology is organised by three goals: Unity, Self-Sufficiency and Discretion. It works across eight aspects of life, through eight sections of work, from the scale of the individual to the globe and beyond.

Freedom — the three together

Every free nation in the Greater Community has met all three. There are no exceptions.

Freedom emerges from all three pillars at once. United, the body holds. Self-sufficient, the body feeds itself. Discreet, the body chooses what to show. Subtract any one and the equation does not solve: a fed and discreet but divided humanity is conquered through inducement; a unified and discreet but dependent humanity trades freedom for resources; a unified and self-sufficient but indiscreet humanity is read like a book and played against itself. Click any pillar to read its definition; click any side of the triangle to read the relationship between the two pillars it joins.
